Ned Schwing stated in his reference e book about the Design 1890 & 1906 that Winchester commenced proof marking them in 1908… I do not know if which is accurate, but will suppose that it's. The “WP” evidence mark was utilized after the barrel and receiver have been mated, assembled and finished. This is highly apparent on the firearms made within the late teenagers through early 30s if the blue flaked (popped) off when the evidence was struck on the receiver frame.
